Forever (2014, ABC)

(Source IMDB)

A recent discovery of mine, I watched the pilot of Forever (2014) about 2 weeks ago. By the following week I had binge watched all 12 episodes available in about 3 days. In my opinion when this sort of binge watching occurs, because you simply can't tear yourself away from watching, you have a winner of a show.

I thin the thing that initially drew me to the show was the fact it is a detective/crime drama. But unlike programs such as CSI it has and unusual sci-fi twist to the story line.

The Program description, as taken from IMDB, reads: 'A 200 year old man works in the New York City Morgue trying to find a key to unlock the curse of his immortality'.

I would recommend this program if you are a fan of such shows as Elementary (2012), and in my opinion I would award it 4.5/5 stars. Missing out only on that extra 1/2 star because at times some of the plot lines can be slightly implausible.

Outlander

"What if your future was the past?"

Based on the series of Outlander novels by Diana Gabaldon; the T.V. series adaptation charts the story of Clare Randall, who in 1945 is a married field nurse from England. However the story soon takes a twist, when whilst on holiday with her husband in Scotland Clare 'falls through time' to find herself in the Scotland of 1743. In an unfamiliar time, Clare must learn adapt quickly in order to ensure her safety and survival. Upon finding herself in 1743 Clare soon meets Jamie Frasier, as Scottish warrior who it would seem Clare has an instant connection with. The rest of the series appearing to chart Clare's transition into 18th Century life and her growing relationship with Jamie Frasier. But life doesn't look set to be easy for Clare, with the threat from the British Army hanging over her and the Scottish rebels she has found herself with, as well as being out of her own time and place and the difficulties of loving two men from different times.

After watching the first episode I must say that as a former history student and general lover of all period dramas I was hooked within the first few minutes of the show. I found the character of Clare Randall (Cardona Balfe) very engaging and relatable to, the character of Jamie Frasier (Sam Heughan) is also engaging not only for his good looks and Scottish accent, but it is also the capturing of the beautiful Scottish landscape that is a draw for me. I would recommend this series to all who enjoy period dramas as well as those who enjoy the mystery/adventure genre. I look forward to watching the rest of the series and seeing how the characters and their relationships develope.

The Outlander T.V. series has been written and produced by the STARZ network and is due for release on their network on the 9th August 2014. However the network has finished and released the first episode, titled 'Sassenach', exclusively available to view now on their website (available to USA residents).
